Questions:
1. What can you tell us about the beginning of your career
at IANA?
ICANN hired me in 2010 to lead the IANA department. At
that time Rod Beckstrom was the CEO and Doug Brent was the COO.
I think they were interested in bringing me to ICANN because my
background was a mix of networking experience within the private
sector and with working under a National Science Foundation
contract. As head of the IANA department, it was my
responsibility to identify and address areas of improvement in
the delivery of the service in preparation for a response to the
upcoming RFP from the US Department of Commerce.
2. How would you summarize your management at IANA?
The IANA department already had a strong team when I
joined ICANN. My management of the department focused on
formalizing and documenting some well established practices so
they were repeatable and predictable. In addition, it was a
management goal of mine to make sure we had a distribution of
knowledge across the team so that no single individual led to a
single point of failure. These two goals were accomplished over
time.
3. In your opinion, what are the great milestones of your
management?
The renewal of the US Department of Commerce contract
in an open bid process, the retirement of that contract with the
US Department of Commerce, and the establishement of PTI, the
affiliate of ICANN that fulfilled the communities’ proposal to
the US government.
4. Do you think you left any project or initiative pending?
There are always projects that are in progress. We are
still in the process of completing the recommendations from the
Framework of Interpretation Working Group. We have started two
multi-year projects: one for a new registry workflow system for
the protocol parameters and an upgrade to the root zone
management system. In addition, we would like to improve the
usability of the iana website. Then, of course, there is the
DNSSEC Key rollover which has been postponded.
5. What do you think are the "golden rules" to stand out in
the industry?
A tough question. “Rules” might be: a) no one owns
the Internet; b) there is no centralized control
6. After the ending of your participation in IANA, how would you
express your legacy to the organization?
Stable, predictable, high-quality, and responsive
service to the community.
